Tigers Doug Fister sets AL record with 9 consecutive strikeouts

The Detroit Tigers and Chicago White Sox are in the middle of a heated race for the American League Central Championship. It doesn’t hurt Detroit that today’s starting pitcher, Doug Fister, was in his zone against the Kansas City Royals.

Fister broke the AL record for the most consecutive strikeouts by fanning nine straight batters from the 4th to 7th innings. The streak started with Salvador Perez and Fister’s last strikeout was Billy Butler. Fister was ahead two-strikes on Perez, but Perez broke the consecutive strikeout streak when he grounded out to short.

Fister is now tied with Nolan Ryan and Roger Clemens, each with 9 consecutive strikeouts. The MLB record of 10 strikeouts was set by Tom Seaver (Mets) in 1970.

The Tigers ended up winning the game, 5-4.
