Power Goes Out During Canucks-Red Wings Game

Detroit Red Wings

29 seconds into the first period of the Detroit Red Wings-Vancouver Canucks game on Sunday, the power went out. The teams and the referees went back to the locker rooms and had to wait about 20 minutes for the power to come back on to resume play.

It was a pretty strange occurrence, and the Red Wings released a statement during the second period about it.

Due to a momentary failure in an outside electrical transmission line that feeds power to Joe Louis Arena, today’s game between the Detroit Red Wings and the Vancouver Canucks was delayed 20 minutes while arena lighting was restored. The outside power source failed briefly just 29 seconds into the first period of today’s game. Power was restored immediately, however, the metal halide lighting system installed at Joe Louis Arena requires 15 minutes to reset to full illumination. Today’s game resumed at approximately 2:45 p.m. ET.
