Corey Perry destroys Jason Zucker with cheap shot, suspension likely coming

Anaheim Ducks forward Corey Perry is a very skilled player, but he’s also been known to be a hot head and to throw some questionable hits.  I’m not sure what Minnesota Wild forward Jason Zucker did to upset Perry, but he clearly made him mad.  Early in the second period, Perry utterly destroyed Zucker while he wasn’t looking and didn’t have the puck.  Perry was clearly targeting Zucker on the play, since Zucker had already passed the puck up the ice.  Perry left his feet and targeted Zucker’s head and Zucker did not look to be in good shape as he laid on the ice.  Perry was given a 5-minute major for interference, a 10-minute misconduct and a game misconduct.  I would fully anticipate Perry having a meeting with Brendan Shanahan soon, and a suspension is very likely.

I hope Mr. Perry has a meeting with Zenon Konopka soon as well. The Wild have been the targets of cheap shots this year. I think Mike Yeo needs to send a message to the rest of the league through Konopka that this will not be tolerated. Who’s next? Parise? To change the words a bit to Mrs. Robinson – “Where have you gone Glenn Sonmor? Minny turns its lonely eyes to you.” Sonmor would have had Black Jack Carlson out ther PDQ.

I see that this was a late hit, I just don’t see that it was cheap shot or that the head was targeted. Zucker’s head is down, so he never sees Perry coming. Perry anticipates the Zucker will continue moving forward which would have resulted in shoulder to shoulder contact. Instead Zucker turns right into Perry, with his head down, resulting in a shoulder to head hit. Suspendable? Probably. But with the 5 minutes major and the game misconduct, Perry has already gotten more punishment than Jarrod Stoll got for knocking Cam Fowler out for 9 games with a concussion and Raffi Torres got for knocking Kyle Palmieri out for 4 games and counting with a concussion.

He plays for the Ducks, which is the Kings farm team. What do you expect?
