Here’s How Michigan Can Make The Big Ten Championship Game

Update: With MSU beating OSU, Michigan needs to beat Ohio State and have Penn State to beat Michigan State.

With three weeks to play in the regular season, Michigan has a legitimate shot of winning the Big Ten East division and playing in the Big Ten Championship game after Michigan State loss to Nebraska last night.

Here’s what would need to happen for the Wolverines to make the Championship Game in Jim Harbaugh’s first-year with the Wolverines:

  • Michigan must win at Indiana and Penn State
  • Ohio State must beat Michigan State
  • Michigan must beat Ohio State

If the above three scenarios were to play out (also assuming Illinois (OSU) and Maryland & Penn State (MSU) don’t pull off the upsets) Michigan would wind up playing on December 5th at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis (likely against Iowa).

Due to the Spartans falling to Nebraska last night, Michigan State, Ohio State and Michigan can no longer all finish with 7-1 Big Ten records. Because of that, the previous tie-break, which was based on the highest ranked team in the College Football Playoff, won’t come into play.  This one will be settled on the field.
