Detroit Red Wings sign former Ottawa Senators captain Daniel Alfredsson

Ottawa Senators captain Daniel Alfredsson was one of those players that you assumed would spend his entire career with one team.  He was the face of the Senators franchise and even put up with them when they were rebuilding the team.  Yet, on the first day of free agency in 2013, Alfredsson left to sign with the Detroit Red Wings.  Alfredsson signed a one-year deal worth a total of $5.5 million.

It is believed that the Senators low balled Alfredsson, because why else would he leave Ottawa?  At 40 years old, Alfredsson is close to retiring and it is possible he thought the Red Wings were closer to winning a Stanley Cup.  Either way, the move is strange and I would love to know what happened behind the scenes.
