Johan Franzen receives match penalty and is ejected for spearing David Perron

This was an extremely stupid thing for Detroit Red Wings forward Johan Franzen to do.  I understand he was upset that St. Louis Blues forward David Perron hit him when his back was turned, but that is still no excuse for turning around and spearing Perron right in the midsection.  Perron was already going to be assessed a boarding penalty for the hit on Franzen and went to the box after the scrum.  With a 4-1 lead and only 7:22 left in the third period, there was literally no reason to do this.

Franzen received a match penalty on the play for spearing and he was ejected.  This will definitely get the league’s attention, and it is possible that Franzen will be suspended after the incident is reviewed by Brendan Shanahan.
