Ichiro Suzuki with amazing slide at home in Game 2 of ALDS

The 38-year old Ichiro Suzuki is still one slick dude.

With two outs in the first inning and Ichiro standing at first base, Robinson Cano hit a ball off the right field wall. Orioles outfielder Chris Davis quickly got it into second baseman Robert Andino who relayed it to Matt Weiters at home. Suzuki, who was clearly beat by the throw, somehow tiptoed around two tags by Matt Weiters and slid safely into home.

The dance move by Ichiro gave the Yankees an early 1-0 lead in Game 2 of the ALDS.

Looks like a correct call by home plate umpire Angel Hernandez as Ichiro was never tagged. However, was Ichiro still on the base path after dodging Weiters’ initial tag? Here is the rule according to the MLB (7.08).

(a) (1) He runs more than three feet away from his baseline to avoid being tagged unless his action is to avoid interference with a fielder fielding a batted ball. A runner’s baseline is established when the tag attempt occurs and is a straight line from the runner to the base he is attempting to reach safely;

Big thanks to @WorldofIsaac for the GIF
