College Student makes $10,000 half-court shot, doesn’t get paid, Pizza Hut steps up

Freshman Jack Lavery at West Chester University got a chance to win $10,000 at halftime of a WCU game. All he had to do was hit a lay up, free throw, three-pointer and a half-court shot before the clock ran out. Lavery did exactly that, but there was one problem, in the rules it said he could only take one half-court shot. He did so well at the first part that he had enough time to take a second half-court shot, a one-handed desperation heave, and he made it. The school wasn’t contractually obligated to give Lavery the money and he had this to say in an interview:

“I stopped and did that one handed shot and it happened to go in. I ran to the other side of the court just high fiving everyone and then I went and bear hugged my dad,” Lavery told ABC’s Kenneth Moton. After knocking down the second half-court attempt, the contest organizers reminded him of the rules. ”I was kind of let down a little bit like, ‘Wow you’re trying to pull that on me right now.’ I wasn’t even aware of that,” he said.

Good news for Jack though. The people at Pizza Hut heard about the incident and capitalized on it, offering Jack $10,000 and free pizza for a year.

A truly genius play on Pizza Hut’s part.
