Red Wings’ player ejected after elbowing player in head

Detroit rookie defensemen, Brendan Smith, should be expecting a call from the new NHL player safety disciplinarian, Brendan Shanahan.

In the third period of Wednesday night’s preseason game, Brendan Smith knocked forward, Ben Smith, out cold with an elbow to the head. Detroit’s Brendan Smith was immediately ejected from the game as Chicago’s Ben Smith was helped off the ice with a head injury.

Although the elbow didn’t appear to be on purpose, this is exactly the kind of hit the NHL and Shanahan want to get rid of.
