Butler head coach Brad Stevens hired as Boston Celtics new head coach

In an absolute stunning press release from the Butler Bulldogs, men’s basketball head coach Brad Stevens has been hired as the Boston Celtics new head coach.  Stevens is only 36 years old and has coached Butler for the past six seasons.  He reached the Final Four twice in those six seasons, in 2010 and 2011.

In the release Stevens said:

“Our family is thrilled for the opportunity given to us by the leadership of the Boston Celtics, but it is emotional to leave a place that we have called home for the past 13 years,” said Stevens.

“We truly love Butler University and Indianapolis, and are very thankful to have had the opportunity to celebrate so many wonderful things together. What makes Butler truly unique is the people that we have been so blessed to work with. When it comes time for our kids to look at schools, we will start with Butler University.” Stevens and his wife, Tracy, have a young son and daughter.

This is a truly shocking move by the Boston Celtics, in what has been an interesting offseason for them so far.  After trading their head coach Doc Rivers to the Los Angeles Clippers, they dumped Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce to the Brooklyn Nets.  The future of the Celtics is certainly going to be very interesting.  No word on the contract details yet, but I can’t believe they wouldn’t have gone with a more experienced candidate.  Stevens will be introduced officially in a press conference at 11 am on Friday.

UPDATE: Brad Stevens is getting PAID.
