Two goals in three seconds: Abbotsford Heat set AHL record while shorthanded

With no NHL games going on, the KHL and the AHL (the NHL’s minor league) are in the spotlight now more than ever.

The Abbotsford Heat (Calgary Flames Affiliate) scored a fantastic goal while shorthanded against the Toronto Marlies (Toronto Maple Leafs Affiliate), and while the announcers were breaking down the goal, you could hear the goal horn going off in the background.  That is a tell-tale sign that a record has been broken.

In fact, this broke not just an AHL hockey record, but an NHL record as well, becoming the fastest goal scored in North American hockey history.  The previous AHL mark was five seconds, and the NHL record is four seconds, with multiple teams tying it.

Apparently the ECHL has protested telling the Puck Daddy Blog that the “ECHL record for two fastest goals also 3 seconds – Roanoke Valley vs. Hampton Roads, 1/22/93. Goals at 10:35 and 10:38 of 1st period.”

Because it was an AHL hockey game and they were breaking down the first goal, there is apparently no video of it, so Heat center Ben Street broke down what happened for the Canadian Press:

“(Assistant coach) Cail MacLean told me they would probably go forward off the draw, so I figured there was no use trying to win it back,” said Street.

“I tried to go forward myself and got pretty good wood on it. I got it high enough that he didn’t pick up on it. I picked the right club, I guess.”

I’m not sure something like this will ever happen again.  This was truly remarkable…now if only someone had caught the second goal on video.
