Insider Thinks Michigan Is The Team To Beat For Five-Star In-State Recruit

Michigan basketball is trying to real in the state’s best player in the 2025 class in guard Trey McKenney. The Flint, Michigan native who now plays at St. Mary’s HS now, is tabbed as the 16th best player in the class. On3’s Jamie Shaw has an early prediction for the Maize and Blue for McKenney.

4-star SG Trey McKenney
On3 Industry Ranking: No. 16

Trey McKenney has taken early official visits to Georgetown as well as TCU and Rutgers who are no longer being considered. The 6-foot-3 shooting guard has scheduled six upcoming official visits. Michigan, Michigan State, Notre Dame, Oregon, Ohio State, and Creighton are scheduled to get those. Sources close to the recruitment suggest to me that the timing of a commitment could be big here.

One source told me that were McKenney to commit today, they like Georgetown’s chances. That same source also said that if this recruitment goes into the Late Signing Period to watch for Michigan. While he is ultimately scheduled to take nine official visits, sources close to the recruitment say to watch Georgetown, Michigan, and Michigan State heading into the final six visits. I am told that Georgetown has done a great job early, there are some close to McKenney that like Michigan State, and that the new Michigan staff has made up a lot of ground quickly prioritizing McKenney.

Continue to watch if McKenney takes all the visits and for a commitment time frame. It was also recently mentioned to me to not be surprised if McKenney does wait until late to sign.

Prediction: Michigan
Confidence Level: 25%

McKenney is actually on campus:
