Nicklas Lidstrom makes surprise farewell speech during Red Hot Chili Peppers’ concert

Red Wings’ defenseman, Nic Lidstrom, announced his retirement from the NHL on Friday. The seven time Norris Trophy winner and arguably the best European born player of all-time, is hanging it up after 20 season with the Wings. Here is our tribute to Lidstrom.

The Red Hot Chili Peppers were performing at Detroit’s Joe Lewis Arena the same night of Lidstrom’s announcement.  Near the end of the concert, the lead drummer and Detroit native, Chad Smith, brought out Nicklas Lidstrom. The crowd went nuts at the sight of Lidstrom, who said about the moment,  “This might top it off.”

Lidstrom also made a trip to Comerica Park on Friday night to throw out the ceremonial first pitch prior of the Detroit Tigers game against the New York Yankees.  A busy day and night for a soon to be retiree moving back to Sweden.
