Detroit Red Wings prospect arrested for “superdrunk” driving

This has to be a first, even as a Michigan-resident, I had no clue that there was an actual law that would make someone guilty of being “superdrunk.”

Riley Sheahan, the 1st round pick of the Detroit Red Wings in 2010, was arrested while playing with their minor-league affiliate Grand Rapids Griffins.  Sheahan, age 20, was arrested with twice the legal limit of alcohol in his system.  The charge of “superdrunk” driving, carries a maximum of 180 days in jail, if Sheahan is convicted.

Sheahan was arrested the day after a game against the Chicago Wolves, and he was benched for their game against San Antonio, which was the next night.  The Griffins are said to be handling the incident internally, and Sheahan has since plead not guilty at his court date.

Sheahan is in his first full-season with the Grand Rapids Griffins and has 3 goals and 1 assist in 11 games.  Sheahan had alcohol issues while he was playing hockey for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, so it will be interesting to see if he can get this under control.
