Blue Jackets Corey Tropp Scores Wild Goal That Didn’t Count

Columbus Blue Jackets forward Corey Tropp got extremely creative on this one. After being stopped initially, the puck landed on top of the net and Tropp decided to poke it off and then bat it into the net. Unfortunately the refs blew the play dead when the puck landed on top of the net.

The Situation Room explains it in more detail here:

The referee informed the Situation Room that he blew his whistle to stop play when the puck landed on top of the net. According to Rule 78.5, apparent goals shall be disallowed “when the Referee deems the play has been stopped, even if he had not physically had the opportunity to stop play by blowing his whistle.” This is not a reviewable play therefore the referee’s call on the ice stands – no goal Columbus.
