Patriots release Aaron Hernandez hours after his arrest

Hours after Aaron Hernandez was taken into custody from his home by Massachusetts State Police, the 23-year-old was released by the New England Patriots. Hernandez is linked to a homicide investigation of Odin Lloyd, a 27-year-old semipro football player in Massachusetts. Last summer the Patriots gave Hernandez a 5-year, $40 million dollar contract.  We will keep you updated this page as things arise.

[Update: The Patriots released this statement.]

“A young man was murdered last week and we extend our sympathies to the family and friends who mourn his loss. Words cannot express the disappointment we feel knowing that one of our players was arrested as a result of this investigation. We realize that law enforcement investigations into this matter are ongoing. We support their efforts and respect the process. At this time, we believe this transaction is simply the right thing to do.”

New England’s contract situation with Hernandez’s going forward.
