Jared Allen rips on city of Detroit

A lot of people talk smack about the city of Detroit. Vikings defensive end, Jared Allen, is another one of those Motor city haters.

“I don’t like going to Detroit,” he told KFAN in Minneapolis this week. “It’s gloomy, it sucks, everything’s brown. There’s snow on the ground. If I had to live in Detroit, I think I’d drown myself in the river.”

If I’m not mistaken, Minnesota is one of the coldest states in the midwest and sees Winter in late Fall. He went on adding more derogatory comments about two cities that fight to stay alive.

“There’s two cities like I don’t go out to eat or don’t do anything. It’s Detroit and New Orleans. New Orleans looks like I’m driving through a third-world country every time I get off the plane, I’m like, ‘Oh, flak jacket.’ I’m trying to get down. I’m like, ‘Ah, crap, I can’t carry my gun here. This sucks.'”

There’s a lot that can be said about Detroit and New Orleans; both have cities have struggled through turmoil, causing them to spiral down hill. For a guy that signed a six-year, $73.26 million contract back in 2008, he probably has no idea what it’s like to live in poverty. These comments by Allen are offensive and deserve an apology for his arrogance.

We’ll see on Sunday if Allen regrets saying this when the Vikings take the field in Detroit. Although the Vikings are the ones looking gloomy at 2-10 this season, this was one of those comments that you keep to yourself.  Despite these remarks from Allen, Detroit needs to be smarter after the whistle and not retaliate to Allen’s smack talk.
