Padres-Dodgers get into brawl, Greinke breaks collarbone

A pretty serious brawl broke out after Carlos Quinton was beamed by a pitch from Zack Greinke during Thursday night’s Dodgers-Padres game.

Quinton took exception to a Greinke pitch in the sixth inning and charged the mound. This led to a benches clearing brawl with Greinke suffering a broken collarbone.

Whether it was intentional or not by Greinke, who in the offseason signed a six-year $147 million dollar deal with LA, it’s the third time he has hit his former AL Central rival Quinton with a pitch in his career.

Following the game, Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said that Quinton shouldn’t be able to play until Greinke is healthy enough to pitch again. At the same time, Dodgers outfielder Matt Kemp, who confronted Quinton in the Petco Park tunnel after the game, had this to say:

“I think Carlos Quentin went to Stanford, something like that?” Kemp said. “I heard there’s smart people at Stanford. That wasn’t too smart. Greinke didn’t do anything wrong. That stuff happens in the minor leagues. It doesn’t happen in the big leagues.”

Tough break for the Dodgers, who now have the highest payroll in baseball, to lose their ace after just two starts into the season.
