NY High School Hockey team forced to forfeit playoff spot because of Harlem Shake video

I still don’t get the whole appeal of making Harlem Shake videos, and it seems that in some instances, the consequences outweigh any sort of positives that may come from making it.  The Harlem Shake has almost taken over the Internet and has spread its way to High School sports, which turns out not to be a good thing.  This isn’t the first time that players have gotten in trouble for making this video, some D-III Football players were kicked off their team for making a video a few days ago.  Before watching the video, it should be noted that around the 15 second mark there are scantily clad High School players, so watch at your own risk.

Here’s the background from Yahoo! Sports:

As reported by the Journal-News’ high school hockey blog, the Nyack (N.Y.)-Tappan Zee (N.Y.) High boys hockey co-op team forfeited its first round Section I state playoff game against Lakeland (N.Y.)-Panas (N.Y.).  While there was no official reason given for the forfeit, there’s little question about what caused the forfeit: A rather racy version of the Harlem Shake, performed by the Nyack-Tappan Zee squad and posted to YouTube during the second week of February. …

“We were forfeited from playoffs for a borderline inappropriate video in the locker room of Harlem shake,” Ice Hawks senior forward Corey Aronson tweeted on Friday to a friend, according to the Lo-Hud hockey blog.

Was this video completely unnecessary to make?  Yes.  Was it inappropriate to put on the Internet?  Yes.  But, I don’t see why this team should have been forced to forfeit their spot in the High School playoffs.  This team worked hard all year, and one bad mistake ruins that?  It would make sense if this team had been trouble throughout the year or something, but it seems drastic to make them forfeit for making the video.  That being said, take this as a lesson to think before you make videos and post them on the Internet.
