LSU Offers Scholarship to 14-year-old

Dylan Moses has yet to start 8th grade, yet he has a scholarship offer to play football at the University of Louisiana State. Moss gained this offer by attending LSU’s football camp in July and running a remarkable 4.46 40-yard dash.

The soon-to-be 8th grader was quoted by ESPN saying, “I was kind of shocked when I first heard it — it was a dream come true. I’ve always wanted to play for LSU since I was a kid, and now it’s coming true in front of my eyes.”

“The coaches told me they were offering — and they were serious. I thought they were playing,” Edward Moses (his father) said. “Really, I thought that they were joking around until I saw the serious look on their faces. So I rolled with it. Let’s see where it’s going to end up.”

There is actually nothing new to college football with offering scholarships to middle schoolers.  Back in 2010, USC secured a commitment from a 13-year old quarterback, David Stills, who will sign in their 2015 class. Similarly, Washington recently secured the commitment from 14-year-old, Tate Martell.

Dylan Moses obviously has some time to get bigger before he plays in the SEC. At 6-foot, 205 pounds with a registered broad jump of 9 feet 3 inches and a 34-inch vertical leap, the kid has a lot of potential.

However, It does seem a bit ridiculous offering a football player that can’t yet play high school football, a college scholarship.

Although you do see this kind of thing happening more and more in basketball and football, do you really need to secure a commitment from a kid before he’s even hit puberty?
