Michigan Made A Fortune Last Year, Even With Empty Seats

The Michigan athletic department took in a very large chunk of change in the 2013-14 fiscal year. According to the Freep, Michigan’s athletics had a $13.04 million surplus after making $157.9 million in revenues and spending $144.86 million.

The football program turned a $64.6M profit after $91M in revenue and costs of $26.75M.  Michigan earned $46M from ticket sales, $26M from contributions and $15M from the Big Ten for conference distributions.

The Michigan basketball program also turned a profit ($6.8M) after its Elite Eight run.

Overall, Michigan’s revenue went up from $104M in 2012-13 to $114M this past year (UM took in $3M from the Winter Classic).
