So, when might you wear wet socks? Walking through the wet floor of the locker room, after a sweaty work out, putting on your socks before you’re completely dry from a shower, having walked in the rain or maybe stepping in your dog’s water bowl. But, if you are a professional basketball player, you never have wet socks as you head into the cooling chamber, as Manny Harris did.
According to CNBC’s Darren Rovell, Harris suffered freezer burn after using the cooling chamber at Nike’s facilities in Beaverton, Ore., with wet socks on.
Although players are reportedly forced to sign a waiver saying that the briefs and socks that are worn while they’re in the machine are not wet, Harris’ went into the Nike’s Cryon-X with wet socks, resulting in the injury and eventually the loss of his job.
On Thursday afternoon, Mitch McGary announced his intent to play college basketball at the University of Michigan. The #2 ranked prospect in the country chose to bring his talent to Ann Arbor instead of Duke or Florida. McGary gives U of M their most highly touted recruit since Chris Webber in 1991.
As a lifelong Michigan fan, it was hard to contain my excitement when McGary announced his college decision. I recalled all the modest Michigan basketball teams that my dad and I watched over the years. Obviously, there were a few bright spots (Daniel Horton, Louis Bullock, Dion Harris), but for the most part we rarely saw a team challenging for the Big Ten title. McGary, more than likely, makes Michigan a Big Ten contender, and a viable Final Four team.
Scout’s Brian Snow has bright praise for the 6’10, 245 pound McGary, nicknamed ‘white-lightning’. ”To put bluntly-he’d be the starting center and the best player on Michigan’s team the moment he steps on campus.” If McGary inserts himself as the best player out of a group that includes Juniors, Tim Hardaway Jr., Evan Smotrycz and Jordan Morgan, it would be an impressive feat, but very possible.
The thing that I admire most about McGary is his work ethic and constant one hundred and ten percent effort. Here’s ESPN’s analysis on Mr. McGary:
Mitch McGary has been making a name for himself as the big man of 2012. McGary is ranked #3 in the nation according to Scout.com, and #4 to Rivals.com. He made headlines this past weekend at Venice Beach while playing in the Boost Mobile Elite 24 Event, shattering the backboard with a powerful dunk during warm ups. While McGary is considering Michigan, Kentucky, North Carolina and Duke, the 19 year old, would be eligible to make the jump straight to the pros.
My father and I had some bonding time today when we went golfing at the U of M course. As we are walking to the first hole I saw two golf carts approaching the 10th hole. It turns out to be Michigan athletic director, Dave Brandon. From his Twitter following the game, now I know why he went strolling by on his phone:
