Tennessee Volunteers unveil new helmet

After firing Derek Dooley and hiring Butch Jones, the Tennessee Volunteers program saw a massive change in their current attitude.  To match the change in coach, who wanted more Tennessee swagger and pride, it looks as though they are changing the helmets.  These images were tweeted out by Derrick Brodus, the Volunteers Junior kicker.

The checkerboard endzones have been a staple at Tennessee and are by far one of the coolest endzone designs of all-time.  Someone within the Volunteers athletic department must have figured, why not make the helmet stripe the exact same way?  Kudos to whomever had this idea and the designer; the execution is flawless.

  1. When a coach takes over a team that is foundering and he immediatly changes the helmet or the uniform it is a clear sign he knows his team is bad. so we distract everybody with something shiny. when it doesnt work and the coach gets fired the next coach will change it back while acting noble about it

  2. Let’s try giving the new coach a chance. As far as the helmet change, when I was growing up there was no stripe, no checkerboard end zone and no power “T”. Those stuck after some very good and bad coaches. As far as ugly helmets or uniforms, that can be spelled MARYLAND.

    • How is tinkering with the uniforms going to keep the team from getting better? You’re making no sense.

  3. They are not new helmets. A friend of Brodus’ who designs custom helmets for a hobby made these for him.

  4. Why not change the uniforms? I understand the whole tradition aspect of it but now a days especially when you havent been that relevant (in a good way) you have to try and find different ways to get recruits, fans, and the people at large excited and talking about your program again. So i say why stop at the helmets make new unis to and see how quick it gets you more publicity
